For a beautiful beach and a great time on Anegada, head to Big Bamboo, Loblolly Beach on Anegada’s North Shore. Seek out crazy Richard, who lives in a tent behind the gift shop. Or Pluto, as he calls it. Buy a piece of wood from him (couple of beers per piece) and ask the awesome bartenders for a magnifying glass. Burn your and your loved ones’s name into the wood and then hammer it to the bar.

If you get lucky crazy Richard might also throw in a torch or knife juggling performance. Sample the famous fresh Anegada lobster as well as locally caught Conch, Red Snapper and Grouper, have some fanatic drinks, chill on the beach or go surfing.

Anegada with it’s warm, clear, turquoise water is an amazing place to go paddleboarding.

What is SUP?

SUP is short from Stand Up Paddling. It is an emerging global sport with a Hawaiian heritage. The sport is an ancient form of surfing, and reemerged as a way for surfing instructors to manage their large groups of students, as standing on the board gave them a higher viewpoint. This increased visibility of what was going on around them such as incoming swell. There are hints that the ancient pacific islanders already used boards to ride waves and move on the water. According to that SUP was an early conjunction of the traditional Polynesian disciplines canoeing and surfing. With the invention of lightweight shortboards into the surfing scene, SUP felt a bit into oblivion but has recently been rediscovered. The nice thing about a SUP is that you don’t need an ocean and waves, you can also go paddling in flat water on your local lake or river.

Paddleboarding on Anegada

A great area to paddleboard on Anegada is heading towards the right from Anegada Reef Hotel, towards Anegada Cottages (pictured above). You can venture out further to the point, where you will find some small (or big) waves to play around in. You will love it, the water is so amazingly clear. If you know what you are doing, you can also paddle around the reefs in the North, the SUP will give you an amazing view from above.

Paddleboard Rental

To our knowledge, there are no boards for rent on the island, so bring your own. You can also rent boards from SUP-StJohn.com on St. John, their rental policy allows you to take the boards to other islands or they can arrange for a charter trip over there on Rockhoppin’s 32 FS Regulator Powerboat.

Stand Up Paddling (SUP) on Anegada Photos

There is not much more to say, just check out the amazing photos below and you will be sold….

One of my favorite beaches on Anegada or maybe in the word is Cow Wreck beach, especially during sunset. Beautiful white sand, turquoise water, great food and drinks, lined with palm trees and conch shells. Words can hardly describe the beauty, maybe just look at the images (thanks to Rockhoppin’ Charters)

Where does the name “Cow Wreck Beach” come from?

In the 1800s, a ship carrying cow bones (used at the time to make chalk and buttons) wrecked on the reef just offshore of a small sandy cove on the northwest coast of Anegada. For years afterwards these bones washed ashore and hence the cove became known as Cow Wreck Beach.

The Anegada Lobster Festival is for everyone who loves food, loves lobster, loves the Caribbean and dreams of the British Virgin Islands!

Anegada Lobster Festival 2014 Participating Restaurants Map was a two-day culinary event held on the shores of Anegada on November 29th and 30th. The event was created to entice our community, visitors, new travellers and the niche market of food connoisseurs to the shores of the British Virgin Islands to experience our versatile tourism product.

The British Virgin Islands Tourist Board, together with the population of Anegada, will feature talented local chefs who will be on hand to prepare, cook, and serve plated sample lobster dishes at participating Anegada restaurants. Over the course of two days, attendees will embark on an island adventure that will take them on a culinary journey via safari, scooter or rental car. Participants will dine on three different lobster samplers at each restaurant at a cost of $10-$12 per sampler plate.

Along with spectacular sightseeing, great food, drink, and a sunset party, attendees will have a unique Anegada experience unlike any other in the Caribbean. Culinary tourism has increasingly sparked interest amongst travellers worldwide that seek to experience a destination’s local culture through authentic dining opportunities.

Anegada is a diver’s delight.

Horseshoe Reef on Anegada

The 18-mile-long Horseshoe Reef, the largest barrier coral reef in the Caribbean, and the third largest on earth. The reef has claimed hundreds of shipwrecks, including HMS Astraea (1808), the Donna Paula (1819), the MS Rocus (1929). As such, there is a lot to see, however, in an effort to protect the reef, the BVI government has made anchoring on Horseshoe Reef illegal.

Other reefs

There are many other reefs, for example in the North. The reefs tunnels, mazes and drops are awesome to explore. The water is amazingly clear and you will see needle fish, mojarra, stingrays, parrot fish and much more.

Bring your own dive gear to Anegada

There is no dive tank or snorkel gear rental available on Anegada.

Anegada is 15 square miles (38 square kilometers) and even though very sparsely populated, in terms of size actually the second largest BVI. It is a bit to big to explore by foot. You can take taxis, rent a car or explore the island on a scooter, in our opinion the most fun option. There are few rental places right by the ferry dock and the Anegada Reef Hotel and the rentals are suprisingly affordable (about 50$ per day).

Most of Anegada’s roads are dirt/sand roads. When it is dry they are pretty good, but watch out for potholes. And don’t worry about getting lost, there is basically one street that runs around the whole island in a big circle, you cannot really get lost. Also the rental places will hand you a nice small map.
